Truck Pulls at the SOKY fair

I met Jackie McClard last night at the Truck Pull even going on at the SOKY fairgrounds. Jackie said he has been pulling for over 35 years and loves every minute of it.

I can only hope that when I am 78 I am still doing what I love.

Women's Survivors Alliance for AACR

Karen Shayne from Brentwood, TN and Judy Pearson, from Chicago, IL founded the Women's Survivor Alliance in 2012 as a way to build a community and educate women whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Survivors themselves, Judy battled breast cancer while Karen is an ovarian and uterine cancer survivor. The pair boned over their struggles, "It's truly a sisterhood," Shayne said of their joint effort forming the WSA.

I met Karen and Judy when they were in Nashville preparing for the National Women's Survivor convention at the Gaylord Opryland hotel in August. Smiles and laughter were a constant theme of shoot as we wandered the Opryland's beautiful atrium for an upcoming feature on them in The American Association for Cancer Research's annual progress report.

World Cup loss

I found myself in a sea of red, white and blue at a local bar as fans watched Team USA fall 2-1 to Belgium in the World Cup.

Corvette Museum Sinkhole for the New York Times

On February 12, 2014, the National Corvette Museum opened to find eight of its classic Corvettes buried 30 feet below the floor in a sinkhole that spanned over 60 feet across the Skydome floor.

Fast forward four months and the museum's board met to discuss the future of the sinkhole that has brought in record crowds to see the gaping hole and the cars it swallowed. Pending final approval, the board decided to preserve a small portion of the whole for continued viewing while retiring the rest to showroom floor.

ASCO 2014

For the past few years I have had the privilege of work on a team covering the American Society of Clinical Oncologists annual meeting in Chicago.

The meeting brings together some of the greatest cancer doctors, researchers and residents to present ground breaking clinical studies and cancer research.

Its amazing to hear the work that these doctors and researchers do, tracking trials and new medications over months and years to determine what the best course of action is to treat patients down the road.

Kentucky Primaries

Kentucky held it's primary elections today and each candidates supporters were out in force trying to pickup as many votes as possible.

The First Time

I first met Nick a few weeks ago to photograph him for an upcoming article about hate crime involving racial slurs being hurled in his direction. After talking and shooting for awhile I knew there was more to this than just the portrait.

You can see the full story HERE, and check out the video below.

Thank you to Nick for sharing your story and best of luck after graduation.

Life Decisions

"It's not a choice I wanted for myself," said Lori Cole, 51 of Bowling Green.

30 years ago she walked into an abortion clinic and says she can still see and hear everything about the experience. A year into a new marriage, Cole was pressured into the decision by her then husband who said the child would put to much strain on the couples finances. Here she poses for a portrait at her home in May.

TopCrops

TopCrops was started by Bill, center back with wheel barrel, and Carol Greer, bottom right, for their daughter Ginna Greer, 20, second from right who graduates from high school this year. Opportunities for people with special needs drops severely after high school and the Greer's wanted to create an opportunity to extend those chances.

The WKU farm provides land for the organization to plant a variety of vegetables which they then sell at the Community Farmers Market.

Wednesday Night

Sprawled on the ground a hundred yards from his home Nick Gilyard hoped he wasn’t going to die like this.

It was a Wednesday night like any other and Gilyard was walking back to his apartment along Kentucky Street when a black SUV approached with a passenger hanging out the window. As it passes he yells, “You stupid fucking nigger!”

Unsure of what was coming next, Gilyard dropped to the ground and felt a cup of ice land on him and scatter across the ground.

The SUV continued on and Gilyard remained on the ground unsure of what was coming next and praying this was as far as the assailants would take it.

The Big Apple

I spent a few days in New York City last weekend attending the New York Times Lens Blog portfolio review. It was a great time exploring the city while seeing old friends and making some new ones. Here's a few frames I made while walking the streets and trying not to get lost.

The Big Apple: Instadition

Aside from being my lifeline and subway cheat sheet in New York my phone played camera much of the time as well. Here are a few of my favorites.
